Small-Scale Agriculture Development
New farmers, underserved farmers, and those with small-scale acreage need information to develop farm management best practices and to implement agricultural methods that protect the natural environment, produce the highest quality food and livestock, and provide a reliable family income. Cooperative Extension helps these farmers with educational programs that deliver the most up-to-date information on farming practices and technologies, agricultural business management, natural resource conservation, and food safety. Programs help small producers identify new crops and livestock enterprises that have the potential to increase farm income and assist them in developing community-based local food systems. They stress the importance of environmental stewardship and natural resource management as practices that can ensure sustainability and profitability. Cooperative Extension also provides information to woodlot and forest owners to help them manage these important resources wisely and partners with organizations across the state to educate farmers about North Carolina’s natural resources.
